BIOGRAPHY FRIEDERIKE VON RAUCH
born 1967 in Freiburg, Germany; lives and works in Berlin.
Friederike von Rauch is a visual artist who works mainly with photography.Originally trained as a silversmith, she later studied industrial design at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. Her photographic work focuses on themes such as space, atmosphere, slowness, and the meticulous modulation of light through reduction and concentration.
Her work has been widely exhibited, with recent shows at institutions including Kunstverein Detmold, Haus am Kleistpark in Berlin, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Museum Dr. Guislain in Ghent, Goethe-Institut in Paris, Berlinische Galerie, KunstHaus Potsdam, Deutsche Oper Berlin, i8 Gallery in Reykjavík, Forum für Fotografie in Cologne, MARTa Herford, Kunstverein Heidelberg, Goethe-Institut Rio de Janeiro, Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, and Hafnarborg Museum in Iceland.
Von Rauch has received numerous awards, published multiple books, and her works are included in both private and public collections. Notably, her pieces are part of the Bundestag, the Deutsche Bank Collection, the Hess Art Collection, and the Royal Dutch Collection.
Friederike von Rauch has found a subtle and very differentiated language that reflects her highly concentrated working method. Her images embody a photographic minimalism characterized by the utmost reduction of visual stimuli and the almost complete elimination of all illustrative references. They create an impression of dreamlike emptiness and timelessness. She deliberately excludes anything overtly dramatic or narrative.
The images derive their particular tension from the fact that the viewer, due to the near-complete absence of context and information, relies solely on the few remaining clues. Each of her photographs can stand alone in its compositional integrity, but together they develop a context that reveals much about spaces and places in our reality that we would otherwise not perceive.
In summary, Friederike von Rauch’s photographs reflect her personally formulated conception of the discovered locations while also shaping our perception of reality as we begin to see our environment through her visual language.
