BIOGRAPHY FRIEDERIKE VON RAUCH

Friederike von Rauch (*1967, Freiburg, Germany; lives in Berlin) is a visual artist who works with photography. She was trained as a silversmith and studied industrial design at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. Her work explores themes of space, atmosphere, slowness, as well as the reduction and concentration of light. In recent years, her pieces have been exhibited at various venues, including the Kunstverein Detmold, Haus am Kleistpark in Berlin, Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, Museum Dr. Guislain in Gent, Goethe-Institut in Paris, Berlinische Galerie, KunstHaus Potsdam, Deutsche Oper Berlin, i8 Gallery in Reykjavík, Iceland, Forum für Fotografie in Cologne, MARTa Herford, Kunstverein Heidelberg, Goethe-Institut Rio in Brazil, Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, and Hafnarborg Museum in Iceland. She has received multiple awards and has published several books. Von Rauch’s works are part of many private collections as well as the public collections of the Bundestag, Deutsche Bank Collection, the Hess Art Collection, and the Royal Dutch Collection.

Friederike von Rauch has found a subtle and very differentiated language that reflects her highly concentrated working method. Her images embody a photographic minimalism characterized by the utmost reduction of visual stimuli and the almost complete elimination of all illustrative references. They create an impression of dreamlike emptiness and timelessness. She deliberately excludes anything overtly dramatic or narrative. The images derive their particular tension from the fact that the viewer, due to the near-complete absence of context and information, relies solely on the few remaining clues. Each of her photographs can stand alone in its compositional integrity, but together they develop a context that reveals much about spaces and places in our reality that we would otherwise not perceive. In summary, Friederike von Rauch’s photographs reflect her personally formulated conception of the discovered locations while also shaping our perception of reality as we begin to see our environment through her visual language.
